The early beginnings of the Eta Psi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. can be traced back to a conversation between two women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mrs. Beulah Louise Witfield Mebane (wife of Brother Francis H. Mabane, Jr.) and Mrs. Aldridge "Zoe" Davidson (wife of Brother Stanley D. Watkins). That conversation led to a meeting at Brother Francis and Silhouette Beulah Mebane's home in Greenville, NC. Those in attendance at that meeting were Brother Francis H. Mebane, Jr. and two young men interested in Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. Stanley D. Watkins and Gene Thomas.

Shortly after that meeting, Brother Manane formed an interest group known as Men Interested in Kappa (MIK) to guide those young men until a Scroller Club could be organized to pledge the first line of scrollers. Under the advisement of Brother Francis H. Mebane, Jr., a Rocky Mount Alumni Chapter Spring 1956 initiate.

The Eta Psi chapter was chartered on February 23, 1975, at East Carolina University. While under the leadership of Grand Polemarch, Dr. Elbert E. Allen and Middle Eastern Province Polemarch, David L. Thompkins as the 85th chapter in the fraternity, and under the direction of Province Polemarch, David L. Thompkins the Chapter was chartered with seven men. Those Brothers were:

Brother Grover Cooper was elected the first Polemarch of the Eta Psi Chapter and Brother Talmage Fauntleroy as Vice Polemarch, Brother Thomas V. Lee, as Keeper of Records, Brother James P. Clark as Keeper of Exchequer, Brother Gene Thomas as Strategus and Brother Richard Daniel as Historian. Brother Gene Thomas was the Dean of Pledges for the first line to cross after the Charter Line.
